History and governance

How the Cambridge Trust was founded, our Board of Trustees, and Royal Patronage

Our founding and status

The Cambridge Commonwealth European and International Trust is a UK charity, set up in the 1980s with a mission to support brilliant students from every corner of the globe to reach their potential at the University of Cambridge.

It is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of distinguished academic leaders from Cambridge and beyond. It is regulated by the Office for Students.

Our Patron: His Majesty King Charles III

We are proud that His Majesty is our Patron, a role that reflects his deep, personal connection to Cambridge that stretches back over half a century.

His Majesty the King with Cambridge Trust scholars

The King himself was a Cambridge student, graduating with a History degree from Trinity College in 1970. Through this Royal Patronage, His Majesty demonstrates a genuine, enduring commitment to the power of education and research to change lives and strengthen society.

Trustees

Our Trustees are volunteer leaders from the University of Cambridge and a variety of sectors. They have independent control over, and legal responsibility for, the Trust's management and administration. They give their time because they believe passionately in the power of education and research.
