Welcome for new international scholars

On Saturday 18 October the Trust held a Welcome Event for its new scholars arriving in Cambridge; more than 500 were awarded scholarships by the Trust for this academic year, from 73 countries across the world.

The event provided an opportunity for the students to meet other Trust scholars and to chat informally with Trustees, Trust staff and with senior representatives of the University.

Helen Pennant, Director of the Trust, welcomed the scholars, congratulating them on their success in gaining highly-competitive awards.

Dame Barbara Stocking DBE, formerly the Chief Executive of Oxfam GB and one of the newest members of the Trust's board, addressed the assembled students, speaking warmly of her time as an undergraduate at New Hall, since renamed Murray Edwards College, where she is now President.

Professor Graham Virgo, the University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, highlighted the importance of international students to the University, outlining the experience that students can expect from the University and, in turn, what the University expects from its students.  Professor Virgo also graduated from the University, in Law, and is now Professor of English Private Law at Downing College.
