The Council for Scientific & Industrial Research contributes to research development in South Africa by undertaking integrated and multidisciplinary research across diverse areas of science. It aims to generate knowledge and expertise that will contribute to an enhanced quality of life for the people of South Africa and the region.
Specific areas of focus are health, energy, the natural environment, the built environment, defence and security, as well as the needs of industry, especially mining and advanced manufacturing. These areas are underpinned by key enabling technologies such as information and communications technology, photonics, robotics, materials science, optronics and biotechnology.
The CSIR works with the Cambridge Trust to offer the CSIR South Africa Cambridge Scholarship, available to PhD applicants in the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology.
