George and Marie Vergottis Foundation

The George and Marie Vergottis Foundation was founded in 1976 by Marie Vergottis in memory of her beloved late husband George.  George and Marie were generous philanthropists throughout their lifetimes. The objectives of the Foundation are:

  • the study and promotion of issues related to Kefalonian and/or more broadly to Ionian History, Archaeology, Folklore, Art, Economy, Environment, Geology, Seismology, Medicine and Shipping, at the Vergottis Cultural Center in Kourkoumelata, Kefalonia;
  • financial assistance to distinguished students from Kefalonia;
  • financial support to charitable organisations of Kefalonia, and other activities of social benefit.

The George and Marie Vergottis Foundation’s partnership with the University of Cambridge aims to provide financial assistance to students of Greek citizenship in order that they may follow degree courses at any level.  The Cambridge Trust delivers the postgraduate scholarship programme on behalf of the University; the undergraduate scholarship programme is managed by the Cambridge Bursary Scheme.
